Fort Norfolk History - 1869

Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, wrote Commodore Augustus H. Kilty, Commandant Navy Yard, Norfolk, on March 29, 1869; “The letter of the Inspector of Ordinance, of the 26 instant, No 65, reporting the damage to the brick wall surrounding the Magazine and Shell Houses at Fort Norfolk, has been received.
Be pleased to direct the necessary repairs to be made, the cost not to exceed the estimated amount, viz. $500, but reduce as much as possible, and the expenditure noted separately on the monthly returns.”

Rear Admiral A. Ludlow Case, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, wrote Commodore Augustus H. Kilty on August 11, 1869; “The estimate for repairs of the Shell House No 2, at Fort Norfolk having been approved by you, the repairs are hereby authorized to the extent named by the Civil Engineer viz $548.”
