Fort Norfolk History - 1868

Captain Henry A. Wise, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, wrote Commander George H. Cooper,
Inspector of Ordnance, Norfolk, on Feb. 22, 1868; “Your letter of the 26 instant, No 53 reporting that the roof of the Magazine at Fort Norfolk requires repairs, has been received.
You will have the necessary repairs made, not to exceed the estimated cost of one hundred and twenty dollars ($120.00).”

Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance, wrote Commander George H. Cooper on August 4, 1868; “The repairs to the building occupied by the Marine Guard at the Naval Magazine Fort Norfolk, referred to in your communication of the three instant, No 189, may be made, the cost not to exceed the estimate of fifty ($50) dollars.”

Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren wrote Commodore Augustus H. Kilty, Commandant Navy Yard, Norfolk, on Oct. 8,1868; “The present expenditure of this Bureau so far exceeds the appropriations, that further retrenchment becomes indispensably necessary in the Ordinance Department of all the Navy Yards.
The work must be positively limited to the wants of the vessels in service, or fitting for service, and for the preservation of materials which are liable to deterioration.
No repairs of arms or equipment will be made so long as there is a stock on hand in good condition for issue, the articles will be stored for repairs which are worth it.
The only exception will be such work, or materials, as were contracted for previous to July 1, 1868. ”

Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren wrote Commodore Augustus H. Kilty on Nov. 3,1868; “Your letter of the 26 ultimo, No 273, enclosing estimate of the Civil Engineer for repairs of the Quay Wall or Dock of the Magazine at Fort Norfolk, and foundation of the crane, is received.
The Bureau hereby authorize the work to be done, the cost not to exceed the amount estimated viz.: ($47.50) and the bills to be made payable from appropriation Ordinance.”
