Commodore John W Livingston Letter 25 March 1864
U.S. Navy Yard Norfolk
March 25th 1864
Sir,
I find that the Army authorities have here are drawing up the piles which were staked across the channel below Fort Norfolk, by the Rebels, to shut out our vessels, these piles are perfectly sound, and of the first quality, they were made at this Yard, and the timber belong here.
I shall request the quartermaster not to use them, they will be excellent for our wharfs, they are using them for all sorts of temporary patch work, in which an inferior quality would answer as well.
I am Very Respectfully,
your obedient servant,
John W Livingston
Commodore Commanding
Naval Station
Norfolk
Rear Admiral Joseph Smith
Chief of the Bureau of Yards & Docks
