Commandant Thomas Dornin Letter 1 November 1856
Commandants Office
Navy Yard Gosport
November 1st 1856
Sir,
I transmit herewith, Semi-Monthly abstract of Material Expenses and work done at this Yard from 1st to 15th October 1856. Monthly Reports of Expenditures on different objects of Improvement and Repairs for July, August, and September, and a statement (furnished by the Civil Engineer) of Materials and Labor charge to objects of Improvement properly chargeable to Contingent, labor charges to repairs properly chargeable to other objects, and labor charges to other objects properly chargeable to dredging all of which I respectively submit to the Bureau for instructions.
I would call your attention to the amount of excess shown against “Magazine &c”. (No 18) September 30 ($4777.53). The cost of building the “Store House for filling”, was taken from the appropriation for Magazine and the balance which appears in its favor ($2864.87) should properly go towards liquidating such excess, and possibly the amount of $3659.62 which you have carried to the credit of repairs of all Reced, at Magazine be applied for the same purpose.
A statement of bills paid during the three months herein maintenance will soon be forwarded in accordance with the Bureaus instructions.
I am Sir Respectfully,
your obedient servant,
Thomas A. Dornin
Commandant
Commodore Joseph Smith
Chief of the Bureau of Yards & Docks
