Joseph Smith Letter 8 August 1850
Bureau of Yards & Docks
8 August 1850
Commodore,
Your letter of the 24th ultimo has been referred to the Secretary of the Navy. I enclose a trace copy of old Fort Nelson, but that does not give the desired information on the 61 acres of ground upon which the magazine is located.
The Secretary says, “You will please inform Comm Sloat, that if in the progress of the survey already ordered, any questions shall arise, requiring the aid of a legal gentleman, let the fact be reported to the Department, when it will decide upon the propriety of employing legal advice”. I see no other way to ascertain the boundary of the plat of ground in question, but to examine the records and ascertain to whom and from whom the land has been conveyed as far back as the records show a conveyance of Fort Nelson and all the lands adjacent.
Respectfully,
yr ob st,
Jos Smith
Chief of Bureau
