Thomas Newton Jr. letter August 29, 1793.

                                                                                             Norfolk, Aug. 29th, 1793.
Sir:
The Brittish Ship " Orion, " of 74 Guns, is arrived at Hampton road, and is in want of supplies of provisions & water. I have heard more are expected from the West Indies. She took the "Sans Culotte," privateer of this coast. A copy of the Consul's letter to me & my answer  I enclose, & shall be glad to be favoured with any instructions your  Exe'y & Counsel may please to give.

Sir:
I have the honor to acquaint you that one of his Majestie's Ships of War has arrived at Hampton roads and have to request you will permit her to water and take provisions they may have occasion for, and also to grant them every assistance in your power consistent with the President's proclamation.

Sir:
Your favor of this date I received. I have no objection to the Ships taking water and provisions agreeable to y'r request, and shall use my endeavors to comply with the President's proclamation in every instance.

The Mayor requested me to inform your Ex'cy he had rec'd a letter from Mr. Hamilton of the same purport, &' should have wrote you but he is very unwell.

I take the liberty to enclose you a copy of a letter which I this day received from the Brittish Consul, together with a copy of my reply thereto.
