Company D 3rd Virginia Cavalry

 

May 1863

  1. Started from Spotsylvania Court House early in the morning.  Scouted around.  Got into a fight at the Iron mine.  Met up with Jackson’s forces.
  2. Remained at Iron mine until nearly night.  The Yankees attacked us.  Had some very hard fighting.  Retreated for some distance.  Joined our brigade on the battle field where Jackson Fo---.
  3. I went on picket on Jackson’s left.  Was relieved just before night.  Got into a fight just before sunset.  Captured a good many Yankees.
  4. Started from the battlefield near Rappahannock marched to Spotsylvania Court House.  Stayed all night.
  5. I started from Spotsylvania Court House at 9 AM to go on picket.  Went to Mount Pleasant.  Cold and rainy in the evening.
  6. I am on picket at Mount Pleasant in Spotsylvania County.  Very cold and rainy.
  7. I was relieved from picket at 11 AM.  Went back to camp at Spotsylvania Court House.  Received orders to be ready to march at 9M.  Cold and rainy.
  8. Started from Spotsylvania Court House at 12 M.  Marched all night and day.  Stopped at Orange Court House at 4 PM.  Went in camp.  Cold and rainy.  Stonemon crossed the river.
  9. In camp near Orange Court House.  Went to Orange to have my horse shod.
  10. I remained in camp near Orange Court House.  I went to graze my horse.
  11. Remained in camp near Orange Court House.  I went to graze my horse.
  12. I remained in camp near Orange Court House.  I went out to graze my horse.  Reading nearly all day.
  13. Rgt. remained in camp.  I got a pass to have my horse shod.
  14. Rgt. remained in camp.  I went out to graze my horse.
  15. Rgt. Inspection by Rails.
  16. We started from Orange at 9 AM.  Marched to Culpeper Court House.  Stopped at our same old camp.
  17. Rgt. remained in camp.  I got a disscord.
  18. Rgt. remained in camp.  I went to graze my horse.  Dress parade at 5 PM.
  19. Rgt. remained in camp.  I went out to graze my horse.
  20. Rgt. remained in camp.  I went out to graze my horse.
  21. Brigade inspection by General Fitz Lee and drill by brigade.
  22. Division inspection by General Stuart accompanied by General Hood.  A great many ladies came to see us.  Fired a salute of 20 guns.
  23. Rgt. remained in camp.  I went out to graze my horse.
  24. Rgt. remained in camp ready to mount at a moments warning.
  25. Drill on horseback at 6 AM.  I went out to graze my horse.  Very cold and cloudy.
  26. Rgt. remained in camp.  I went to the shop to have my horse shod.  Cold and cloudy.  I issued out clothes to the Rgt.
  27. We went out on dress parade at 6 PM.  Came off at 7 PM.  We had several speeches in camp.  Very warm and clear.
  28. Rgt remained in camp ready to mount at a moments warning.  Dress parade at 8 AM.  Election day.  We went to graze our horses twice during the day.
  29. Drill on horseback at 8 AM.  Relieved at 9 AM. -----------  At 3 PM went out to graze our horses.
  30. Rgt. remained in camp.  I was detailed to go for ------- drill on foot at 5 PM.
  31. Rgt remained in camp.  We had preaching at 11 AM and at 3 PM and a good many ladies to see us.  I went to the Court House at night.
