John Saunders letter July 18th 1796

                                                                                                 Norfolk July 18th 1796
William Simmons Esq
Dear Sir
I have just received a letter from Mr. McHenry directing me to remain here for further orders concluding that he means to let me stay in this quarter awhile.  Have thought proper to enclose you my order as I wish to have it settled on your books.
There appears to be a balance of 8 dollars 80 cents due me, which if found correct, you will please to forward it with my pay for August.  I shall be obliged to receive my rations at your office entirely owing to the manner that business is conducted here.
I am with great respect
Sir your most obedient servant
John Saunders

Papers of the War Department 1784 to 1800

Papers of the War Department is a project of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, George Mason University with funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Fire destroyed the War Department office in 1800. For decades historians believed that its files, and the window they provide into the early federal government, had been lost forever. This collection unites copies of the lost files in a digital archive that reconstitutes this invaluable historical resource.
