Frances Martin was born in Montclair, NJ. in 1906.  She began attending Barnard College but left when she married an attorney based in Norfolk.  She later completed her undergraduate work as well as her master’s degree at Old Dominion University. Martin was the author of many children’s books and served as the children’s book editor for the Virginian Pilot during the 1950s.  She was also very involved with local children’s theatre and authored several plays that were performed throughout the United States and Canada.  Martin passed away on March 4, 1998.
