Rev. Richard Hausber Bowling, Sr.
Calvary Cemetery
Old Calvary, Block 77, Lot E, Space 9
(September 14th, 1864 – July 26th, 1913)
Rev. Bowling was the pastor of Norfolk’s First Baptist Church, located on Bute Street. He served as pastor from 1890-1913, and was the driving force behind the construction of the church’s impressive current structure. According to the Norfolk Journal and Guide, he had a reputation as one of “Virginia’s outstanding ministers”. After his death in 1913, his former congregation erected a large granite monument next to his grave in Calvary Cemetery. They also erected a monument to his wife, Lallie (1869-1905) next that of her husband. Their son, Richard H Bowling Jr, succeeded him as pastor and remained in this position for the next 40 years.
