Miss Stokes was born in Norfolk, to William and Georgia Stokes. She was a graduate of the Freedman’s Hospital School of Nursing, in Washington, DC. For many years, she worked as a registered nurse at the Kings Daughter’s Hospital and the Norfolk Community Hospital, of which she was a founder. She was admired for her strong commitment to the profession of nursing.
