 Eleanor W Young picture

Eleanor Young was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. After graduating from St. Augustine’s College, she married Plummer B. Young, Sr. Her husband founded Norfolk Journal and Guide, a newspaper catering to tidewater’s African-American community. With her help, he developed the Norfolk Journal and Guide into one of the premier publications of its kind in the country. Their son P. B. Young Jr., carried on his father’s legacy with the Norfolk Journal and Guide.

She was active in the Norfolk community, particularly with the YWCA. After her death, Camp E. W. Young was founded with support of the YWCA. It is a 30 acre nature camp designed for youth activities. The camp is located in the City of Chesapeake (then rural Norfolk County), along the Intracoastal Waterway. It has provided recreation and learning activities for Norfolk youth for over 50 years. Since 1967, it has been operated by the Norfolk Public School system. She is interred at Calvary with her husband.
